Chickens are some of the most misunderstood animals out there. Although chickens
are amazingly intelligent – they can learn their names, play memory games, and learn tricks – and emotional animals, the majority of people see them as nothing more than food. In this video, we see what can happen when people stop seeing chickens from this narrow view and actually see them as the individuals they are.
About a year ago, Edgar’s Mission Farm Sanctuary received a mysterious package at their gates that had a sign reading “Friends Not Food” taped to it with an enclosed letter as well. Rescuers were shocked to find that inside of the boxes there was a group of hens. The accompanying letter held a sweet and simple message: “We have been rescued! Please look after us and show people that we are friends not food!”
The chickens were quite poorly, their feathers were sparse and they had clearly been traumatized from life in a factory farm, but Edgar’s Mission was determined to give them the best life possible. Now, a year later, the ladies are thriving – and indeed are showing the world that they are friends, not food.
