Chimpanzees are extremely expressive and intelligent creatures. When you consider
that chimpanzees share 90 percent of the same DNA as humans, it’s no surprise how cognitive and aware these creatures are. They form life-long friendships, communicate with their loved ones, and even utilize tools. While many chimps use tools in nature to capture insects, open nuts, and find sources of water, Jamie, the rescued chimpanzee in the video above, has chosen a tool from the man-made realm: an emory board. She files, she checks her nails, even gives the board a few licks? We won’t question her methods…
Seeing a chimpanzee interact with an object we’d only expect humans to use, and actually using it correctly, reminds us how similar these animals actually are to us! Jamie clearly cares about grooming, sees these act as a small form of entertainment, and most importantly, has the free will to file her nails whenever she pleases. In the past, Jamie may have been under human control, but now within a sanctuary she is free to be her own person! If that means she wants to spend the day filing her nails and grooming her fur, that’s her choice. We hope one day all chimpanzees will be able to live their lives in equal liberation.
