Shut Down Illegal Bear Farms and Stop Dogfighting

sad bear in cage
It’s horrible to hear about animal abuse cases or read the ways humans are
endangering many species. Fortunately, there are things we can do to speak for them. One of the ways we can help and lend our voices to good causes is by signing petitions. Such petitions are sent to people in powerful positions that can make a change, especially when they see just how many people stand behind the cause. We can demand change, justice, and stop tragedies by speaking up and doing our part.
There are horrifying things happening around the world every week like extinction, hunting, exploitation, and cruelty. If you are looking for a way to help animals, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week, which include supporting the legislation to ban the killing of healthy shelter animals, protecting platypuses, and demanding justice for a pug puppy killed during a break in!
We want to thank you for being the change you wish to see in the world and giving a voice to the voiceless.

1. Ask Thailand to Clean Up Oceans After Death of Beloved Dugong

Marium the dugong
Marium was a beloved orphaned dugong who was found by biologists in Thailand. They found her all alone and took great care of her, even bottle feeding her. Sadly she died after ingesting plastic. As the petitions states, we are all a bit culpable when it comes to plastic pollution, but sign this petition if you want Thailand to attempt to clean up their oceans. If Marium, who was being cared for by humans was still at risk, imagine the rest of the marine animals!

2. Ask Queensland Government to Protect Disappearing Platypus

Platypus
Brisbane populations are declining around Australia. In Brisbane, there was always a steady population of platypus until recently. According to this petition, there isn’t even a proper sustainable wildlife management plan to help monitor their population. Paved roads, neighborhoods, and carved up unconnected areas make it difficult for platypus to roam freely and find mates. Disease and inbreeding is hurting their population even more. Sign this petition to urge the government of Queensland “to actively track local platypus populations and protect their habitat before they’re gone from the region forever.”

3. Ask Authorities to Catch Man Murdering Cats on Japan’s Cat Islands

Japan has 11 “cat islands” where up to hundreds of cats roam free. In the last few years, the population has declined by two-thirds. Animal rights activists discovered that a man has been lacing fish with agricultural chemicals. As a result, cats have been seen fumbling, lurching in pain, and dead. Sign this petition to ask Kitakyushu Police to prosecute the farmer and charge him with animal cruelty for murdering Umashima’s cats.

4. Tell Gumtree to Help Stop Dogfighting!

Advertisements on websites like Craigslist, Facebook, and Gumtree in which dogs are sold are given away for free are just contributing to the illegal dogfighting trades. Other sites like Facebook and Craigslist have begun making efforts to put an end to the ways in which their sites contribute to these cruelties, but Gumtree has yet to do so. Sign this petition to ask them to not allow “free dog” posts on their site!

5. Support Legislation to End School Experiments Involving Abandoning Animals

In schools across New York City, students are being given an experiment in which they watch duck and chicken eggs “hatch.” It’s all very cute during the process, but these chicks and ducklings eventually grow up. Then, they can no longer stay in the schools. That’s when they’re abandoned at parks and across the city. It’s not a good message to give children that we don’t need to care for animals. Sign this petition to support legislation that ends this kind of animal abuse.

6. Punish People Who Shot Orangutan 74 Times!

Orangutan named Hope
Hope is an endangered Sumatran orangutan who was shot 74 times. In the devastating ordeal, her two month old baby died and it took a lot of care and recovery for her to get better. She was left with broken bones, infections, and completely blind. Yet the only punishment the people who cruelly attacked her received was reciting prayers. This is not the appropriate punishment for the terrible thing they did! Sign this petition if you want this case to go to court so that the perpetrators can be seriously punished.

7. Justice for Whale Shark Who Was Treated Like a Surfboard

Whale sharks are endangered, so they need protection as well as space and respect from humans (as all wild animals do). Ideally, wild animals should be left alone in their habitat, but there are strict rules in place for those who swim with them. For instance, you must not wear sunscreen, be with a certified guide, keep your distance, and never touch them. However, a tourist and a man presumed to be his tour guide were recorded standing on a whale shark and pretending to ride him like a surfboard, with no regard for their safety or the shark’s well being. Sign this petition to tell Mexican authorities to find the tour guide and punish him for what he did, or at the very least take action to prevent these situations from happening again.

8. Justice for Pug Killed During Break In

Man hugging pug named Coco
Coco the pug was with a petsitter while her family was away for the weekend. She was a very friendly dog who apparently loved running to greet people at the door and that’s likely what she did when someone attempted to break in the house. The pet sitter was not woken up, but poor Coco was thrown over a fence and her lifeless body was found. She was only eight months old. The perpetrator has been caught. This petition asks that he be punished to the fullest extent of the law for such animal cruelty. Sign the petition if you agree.

9. Support the Companion Animal Protection Act to Ban Killing of Healthy Animals in New York

The Companion Animal Protection Act (CAPA) would ensure that healthy animals are not killed by shelters. Animals should be entering a haven when at a shelter. CAPA would require certain adoption programs that would prohibit the killing of animals when there is available kennel space or the possibility of transferring to another facility. It includes many measures that will prevent the unnecessary killing of healthy animals. Sign this petition if you support the passing of CAPA in New York!

10. Shut Down Illegal Bear Farms and Ban Bear Dishes in Restaurants

In some parts of Asia, bear claw soup is a delicacy. It’s believed that a bear’s paw can transfer power and virility, of which bears are a symbol. Unfortunately, bears are actually eaten in many places around the world, including the United States, but to make these dishes in Asia, many bears are raised on illegal bear farms. They’re held captive until one day, they’re dragged from their enclosures and their paws are chopped off one by one while the bear is still alive. Then the bears are beaten with steel bars to “tenderize the meat.” It’s truly horrific. Sign this petition to ask China to crack down on illegal bear farms and restaurants that serve such dishes.
