Saving Battery Hens From the Ruthless Egg Industry

If you’ve ever had the opportunity to spend time with a chicken, then you already know
how intelligent, affectionate and friendly they are. Chickens can solve complex problems, understand cause and effect, and anticipate and plan for the future. Young chicks even show object permanence. When an object is taken away and hidden from their view, chicks still know that object exists. In humans, object permanence doesn’t start to develop until a baby is about six months old, but chicks show this ability as early as two days old. Chickens are also able to show compassion to other beings, just like this one chicken who adorably hugs a young boy.
Sadly, chickens are the most abused animals on factory farms. As battery hens, chickens are packed tightly in a small, dirty cage with five other birds for their entire lives – lives which may only last up to a year or two and are marked by constant pain and suffering. Male chicks are deemed “useless” to the industry, they are gassed or ground up alive. Others meet their ends by being boiled alive or thrown still breathing into trash bags.
Unbound Project is a multi-media and book project with a goal to celebrate women in animal advocacy, both contemporary and historical women. Unbound Project is currently featuring Lina Lind Christensen, who rescues animals from the brink of death and gives them sanctuary. In the new powerful short film titled “The Machine,” seen above, Christensen shows the process she goes through to save chickens from the horrific egg industry. This amazing woman runs a sanctuary out of her backyard and in just five years, she has re-homed 1,200 rescued battery hens. Thanks to Christensen, these gentle beings will now spend their lives in a big backyard with their new families. A few hens from each rescue stay with her and become “ambassadors for their species” when the media or school classes visit the sanctuary.
