A CHRISTMAS EVENING WALK AROUND YORK

A Christmas Evening Walk Around York
York, a beautiful place to walk around any time of year, but Christmas makes the City come
even more alive. Lights adorning landmarks and bridges. The Christmas market in full flow with the cold evenings extra revellers. A perfect time of year too, to spend an evening, walking with camera, looking out for unique scenes as well as the known hotspots.

I have walked around York many a time, be it the short, historic route around the City Walls, or through the middle on a busy shopping day. York has so much to offer for all kinds of tastes. History lovers have landmarks galore from York Minster to Clifford Tower and the connections with the Vikings.
There is a well known nightlife scene that draws many of course but then there is, shopping! It was nice to be wandering down Stonegate with only a handful of people. A nice evening vibe.

Betty’s Tearoom, at the bottom end of Stonegate in St Helen’s Square, the cafe that has been drawing crowds here since 1936. An interior based on the the Queen Mary ocean liner, also launched in 1936. People will queue a long way here for one of their famous afternoon teas as a break from shopping.

Of course, a walk through York would never be complete without a walk down The Shambles! With its 14th Century overhanging timber buildings and narrow, little street, one of the most famous and picturesque streets in England. Nice to find it quiet, a rare sight.

Of course there is lots more to York than the centre and the old streets. Expansive a great views can be found by getting out on foot. The bridges have a great charm and variety of views like Ouse Bridge below. I showed you some sunsets from Lendal Bridge previously.

Back into the City within the walls and a very underestimated street. Micklegate always seems more peaceful than it should, given how nice it looks and the wealth of nice bars and shops. Maybe because it is opposite to the Minster from the station etc. I would take a wander down here if you are looking to see all the nice areas of York.

Yes, the Christmas markets, how could I go and forget them? Of course not. The Festive ambience, the smell of Mulled Wine, the aroma of food both local and varied from far away. Lights in the trees and little wooden chalets selling their wares. Families taking an evening time out to take it all in. Wonderful!

I walked and walked but the time flew by so fast. When I get out with camera and without a set aim I find it both relaxing and productive at the same time. You really do not know what to expect or find. Love it.

When Christmas is over a new season will dawn on the City and will give me an excuse to get back out there with different settings and ambience. Life keeps moving and there to be captured. Happy travelling all and have a wonderful Christmas!
